Sonic the Hedgehog will be released on VOD and blu-ray way ahead of schedule due to the COVID-19 outbreak closing theaters.

THe worldwide COVID-19 outbreak has affected the movie business in an unprecedented way. Pretty much everything scheduled to be released in the next three months has been pushed back to the end of the year or postponed indefinitely. What's more, production on future movies has been forced to halt as everyone is urged to stay inside.

Fans around the world have been campaigning for certain out of the ordinary measures to be taken. Examples include requests for Birds of Prey to hit VOD earlier than intended to give people something new to watch. There's even a petition to have Black Widow added to Disney+. Its May 1, 2020, theatrical release has already been postponed.

In terms of movies coming to on-demand services earlier than planned, Paramount has proved it can be done this week. The studio announced that Sonic the Hedgehog will be made available via on-demand services on March 31, 2020, reports Cosmic Book News. That's just 46 days after it was released in theaters. Furthermore, Sonic will be released on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on May 19, 2020.

Sonic's director Jeff Fowler retweeted the news along with the message "Hope our #SonicMovie can help ease some of that time indoors!!" It has certainly done a good job of entertaining fans up until this point. The Sonic movie has exceeded all expectations at the box office despite what has been going on around the world. It grossed $70 million during its opening weekend, and has tallied up more than $300 million worldwide.

When the postponement of No Time To Die's release date was postponed, other movies and studios quickly followed suit. It was like a domino effect. Hopefully, this gesture by Paramount will do the same thing. Any movies recently released at the theater, or ones that had release dates coming soon, it might be best for its creators and its fans to forget theaters just this once and release titles straight to VOD services.
